Natural Treatment Options
There is a big world out there of natural treatment options for our pets. The problem is not many people know they exist! Vets typically do what they are taught, traditional medicine, and often don't refer to a natural practicioner even when a patient is a great candidate for that type of treatment. Some vets are recognizing the importance of natural healing modalities, but they aren't taught much, if anything about them in vet school, so they will only learn about them if they choose to on their own. Whether or not your vet is familiar with a natural treatment option, this shouldn't deter you from seeking out that option, after speaking with the practitioner and if it sounds like something that can benefit your pet. Remember, whatever field the natural practitioner is in, they can recognize who is an ideal candidate for their care and who is not.
You may have a time in your pet's life that you need one or some of these options. I have created a list with a brief explanation of each so that you can be prepared if you do.
Some of these options can help a healthy pet too. For instance, animal chiropractic can help maintain spinal health and core training or swimming can help maintain healthy muscle tone.

Animal Chiropractic
Chiropractic is also a wonderful holistic treatment method for not only people, but pets as well. Animal chiropractic is a gentle, yet highly effective treatment modality that allows the animal to utilize their very own healing capabilities.
Chiropractic care deals with the nervous system. The spinal cord carries nerves that are distributed to EVERY single organ, tissue, and cell of the body. A misalignment of a joint, called a subluxation, adversely alters nerve function to those areas. Altered nerve impulses leaving the spinal column affect the function of organs, tissues, and cells supplied by that nerve. Dysfunction of the nervous system can lead to a series of illnesses and conditions, such as pain, disease, fatigue, muscle weakness, balance/proprioception issues, immune suppression, and much more.
When a joint is subluxated, it looses motion and position. A chiropractic adjustment is aimed at correcting the subluxation and restoring the proper movement of the joint and also the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Chiropractic works to eliminate the root cause of the problem and not just simply treat the symptoms.
It can also be used for wellness care. Healthy pets under chiropractic care may have improved performance, more energy, and better immune response. Additionally, chiropractic may also provide a prevention for disease, injury, and arthritis. Well adjusted animals many times experience a whole new level of health.
The following are some general conditions which may be helped with chiropractic:
• Pain
• Difficulty eating
• Limping
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Neurological conditions
• Arthritis
• Muscle spasms
• Lameness
• Abnormal gait or posture
• Abnormal head shaking
• Chronic ear infections
• Allergies
• Difficulty executing a desired movement
• Disc herniation
• Paralysis
• Muscle strain
• Ligament sprain

Herbs
Medicinal herbs for canine use provide natural treatments for illnesses. Natural treatments are ideal for dogs that may be sensitive to conventional treatments and are often preferred by dog owners who want to keep their dog healthy holistically.
Plants are used medicinally because they do not have high toxicity, accumulate in the body, or cause addiction or withdrawal symptoms. Herbs are used to enhance immune function; improve digestion; normalize bodily functions; destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi; soothe irritated tissues; calm nerves; and relax muscles.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a natural medicine that uses medically active substances in infinitesimal (extremely small) doses that stimulate the immune system, and allow for self healing. The success of Homeopathic Medicine lies in getting the symptoms to match that of the remedy.
"Almost any problem that can be treated by conventional western medicine (allopathy) can be treated by homeopathy. Veterinarians who practice classical homeopathy according to academy standards have found that many otherwise ill patients can be restored to health.
Homeopathy is a holistic discipline and the principles of good health such as diet, exercise and removal of stresses are also part of the process or restoring health. Veterinarians who practice homeopathy have found it to be a gentle, safe and effective medical system which offers a true cure to many patients." -AVH
Examples of diseases that respond to homeopathy include:
Skin allergies, ear infections, asthma, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, epilepsy, bladder infections, thyroid disease and a host of other conditions.

Flower Essences
"Flower essences are herbal infusions or decoctions, made from the flowering part of the plant, which uniquely address emotional and mental aspects of wellness. The first 38 flower remedies were formulated by a British physician, Dr. Edward Bach, in the 1930's, although new remedies from other plant species are now available.
To understand how flower essences work requires a recognition that the human being is more than a physical body, but also incorporates a "body" of life energy, a "body" of sensitivity and feelings, and a spiritual essence or Self. Flower essences are energetic imprints of the life force of plants which interact with these subtle bodies of the human being, and evoke specific qualities within us. We can say that they work in a similar way to inspirational music or art, which carry meaning through the vehicle of sound or light, while the flower essences work through the medium of water." -FES Flowers

Massage
Canine massage is a branch of massage therapy that promotes health in dogs. Specifically, canine massage therapy is a form of alternative therapy the benefits of which may include relaxation, increased oxygenation, relief from pain, improved joint flexibility, as well as benefits to the immune system. It uses touch to maintain or improve both physical and emotional well-being.
Massage can be beneficial for:
• Soft Tissue Conditions: Massage is beneficial for tight, spasming, or sore muscles as well as soft tissue injury.
• Pain or Stress: Massage helps reduce pain and anxiety levels. It can also allow for normal circulation of blood and lymph which can be beneficial for dogs that have been immobile.
• Health and Wellness: Massage can help ensure normal muscle health, which can be especially beneficial for giant breed dogs who are difficult to lift and move with soft tissue conditions.
• Post-Surgery: Massage can greatly benefit post-surgery recovery in decreasing inflammation and pain. It also allows for normal blood and lymph circulation in patients who are temporarily immobile. Additionally, it helps the body flush sedation and anesthesia medications.
• End of Life Care: Many terminally ill pets spend a lot of time laying, often in some discomfort or pain. Massage can help to alleviate this, decrease any stress, and improve quality of life.
• Gastrointestinal Function: Massage can positively impact digestive function by improving gastric motility.
"The benefits of therapeutic canine massage are endless. When massage is used in conjunction with chiropractic and veterinary care, it can provide relief from similar, everyday chronic ailments that plague us humans. These include: arthritis, postural deviations, trigger points or sore muscles, tension and stress and swollen, achy joints. It can especially be beneficial with recovery post-surgery. Some improvements can be noticed immediately after a successful session. Visible and palpable changes can include: deep relaxation, improved gait and posture, more active stretching at home, quicker recovery time from injury or surgery, better range of motion and flexibility, increase in athletic performance, and relief from pain and swelling in tissues. Also know that massage can provide comfort for pets during end of life."

Reiki
Rei means “spirit,” and Ki means “energy,” so literally, the word Reiki means “spiritual energy.” All things have energy to them, energy flows through our energy centers and pathways, also known as chakras and meridians. Reiki allows for an energy space to support self-healing. Reiki helps to balance and open up energy flow allowing energetic balance and harmony which results in physical, mental/emotional and spiritual healing.
A healthy pet will respond to Reiki by becoming relaxed and emotionally peaceful. For an owner dealing with their pet’s quality of life diminishing, they can get comfort in knowing that Reiki is a powerful yet gentle way of providing comfort, relief from pain, fear and anxiety. Reiki not only supports a pet as it transitions, but also the family that has to make a difficult decision to help their pet.
Reiki can be beneficial for:
"Animals respond well to Reiki treatments, as they find the gentle, loving nature, and warm “buzz” that is felt very soothing and comforting. When relaxed completely, energies can flow freely in the body, thus allowing the natural healing process to accelerate. This includes emotional, behavioral and physical illnesses/injuries, in a very gentle way. With no side effects!" -Mike McGuigan

Therapeutic Laser (Class IV)
The therapeutic laser provides relief. The wavelength of light is able to penetrate tissues and decrease inflammation, stimulates macrophages to clean up and repair damaged tissues. It also allows your pet to heal faster after surgery or any traumatic injury. The therapeutic laser is used for pain relief, wound healing, arthritic conditions, intervertebral disc disease, dermatitis, post-surgical pain and swelling, lick granulomas, periodontal disease, gingivitis, otitis, bladder infections/inflammation, and more.
Therapeutic lasers are not all created equal. If searching for therapeutic laser treatment for your pet, ask what class or power output the laser is. You want Class 4 laser, which is anything over 500 milliwatts/0.5 watts. (Class 3, a or b, is basically the equivelent of a standard laser pointer or just above, don't waste your time with that.)
The following are some of the general conditions which may be treated with class 4 therapeutic laser:
Osteoarthritis, joint pain, tendinopathies, edema and congestion, ligament sprains, muscle strains, puncture wounds, post-traumatic injury, post-surgical pain, neck and back Pain, hip dysplasia, burns, chronic wounds, rehabilitation, post-orthopedic, surgical recovery
