Vaccines
Video Credit: Planet Paws www.facebook.com/PlanetPaws.ca/videos/1404799696261575/
Vaccines are a hot topic these days. Sometimes even questioning if something could possibly be related to a vaccine causes problems. Why? Some things in health care operate by belief systems. If you question a vaccine, some people will automatically place you into an "anti-vaxer" category. Whatever you choose, the only person it need to sit well with is you. Research. Learn. Decide for yourself what is right or wrong for your dog.
My past shelties used to receive the normal vaccines. My Italian greyhound started off life that way. Then I began to research. It was similar to my research of "good kibbles" to feed. The more I researched, the less I wanted to do with what I was researching!
I did not create this section to change your mind. I created this section to pass on what I have learned and with that, you can make a better educated decision in what is right for your pet.

3 Incidences Where You Should Not Vaccinate
• Your pet has a chronic health condition, whether arthritis, allergies, epilepsy, degenerative myelopathy... they should not receive any further vaccines.
• If your pet is going through an acute health condition, they should not receive any vaccines until that condition is resolved.
The above two reasons are written clearly on the vaccine insert. Causing an acute immunologic response in your pet while they are already dealing with another condition or disease can be detrimental to their health, and possibly their life, especially if administering multiple vaccines together. I've seen it happen. I have clients who visited their vet for the flu or kennel cough and since the dog is due for vaccines soon, they get everything done in that visit for convenience. This is not a god idea. I've had a few patients now go into seizures and other neurological disorders following vaccines given while ill.
• Many vets today are also learning that if a pet owner chooses to vaccinate, the pet need not receive annual vaccines. Many are better spread out 3-7 years. Over-vaccination is contributing to many chronic health issues such as allergies, arthritis, auto-immune conditions, and more.

What is Required By Law?
The Rabies Vaccine is the only vaccine which is mandated by law. Most states now allow the 3 year rabies vaccine after the 1 year has been administered. These are both the same vaccine, however, if you get the 1 year vaccine instead of the 3 year, by law, your dog is required to be vaccinated again in 1 year.
The reason the 3 year vaccine came to be is because of the Rabies Challenge Fund. Through research, this organization has found that dogs "maintain immunity" (antibody response in the body) longer than 1 year. They are in the process of researching a 5 year vaccine as well as exploring the possibility of titer testing for rabies antibodies to determine whether a dog needs to be vaccinated or not.

If you are going to vaccinate, veterinarian, Dr. Patricia Jordan's guidelines to support the body before and after vaccination are as follows:
• Raw Diet
• Vitamin Support
• Curcumin - protects against p53 mutations from adjuvants and boosts T cells that typically drop out when vaccinated
• Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - counteract oxidative damage
• Moducare plant sterols - lifts CD4 count in turn lifting cell mediated immunity as vaccines can decrease this, so pets can break with demodex, fungal infections, coccidia, loose fur
• Chlorella - heavy metal detoxifier
• Astragulus - boosts immune system from outer layer (skin)

Homeopathic Detox Following Vaccination
Many pet owners have become aware of detoxing following vaccination with Lyssin and Thuja. Many homeopathic veterinarians regularly administer these after vaccinating a pet as well. There are sources online where you can purchase these, such as naturalrearing.com and peterdobias.com. Best would be to work directly with a vet who practices classical homeopathy. However, these online sources come in handy for those without a homeopathic vet.
Please note that when it comes to homeopathic remedies, if you administer multiple doses, when it is not needed, you can cause the problems that you are trying to prevent. Most of the sources online will tell you only 1 or 2 doses, so please be cautious in that regard.

My Findings In Vaccine Research
My research comes from studies, personal experience with patients, my education in chiropractic and animal naturopathy, and the following animal health professionals: Dr. Patricia Jordan (DVM), Dr. Stephen Blake (DVM), Dr. Kim Bloomer (VND), Dr. Jeannie Thomason (VND), Dr. Roger Schultz (DVM), Dr. Rebecca Carly (DVM). There is also a great book available called, How To Immunize Your Dog Without Vaccines by Aleksandra Mikic. I don't vaccinate (except when mandated by law) and the reasons being are a culmination from these sources. Again, this is my choice. You need to decide what is right for you.
“The only safe vaccine is one that is never used.” Dr. James R. Shannon, former Director, National Institute of Health [1955-68]
“Homoeopathic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners have maintained for some time that vaccinations do more harm than they provide benefits.” -Dr Charles E. Loops (DVM)
“I think that vaccines…are leading killers of dogs and cats in America today.” -Martin Goldstein (DVM)
The following are some of my vaccine-related findings that I believe are worth sharing with you:
(1) Vaccinations keep disease in play. Manufacturers take the most virulent strain of the disease to make a vaccine. Many times vaccines are introduced about the same time the disease they are trying to prevent is in the process of a natural die-off, and then those vaccinated shed the disease in the following hours post-vaccination.
(2) Modified live are most effective for distemper, however live vaccines infect and replicate in order to get immunity. If you push this vaccine in an immature immune system or under stress, it causes a huge drop in Vit C. Without this drop and optimal nutrition, you need not have to worry about catching diseases in the first place.
(3) When it comes to Parvo, every vet that I have listened or spoke to said that the dogs that they see who come down with Parvo are all vaccinated dogs. They haven't seen any unvaccinated dogs contract it. Interesting, huh? Dr. Stephen Blake talks much about this. This is not to say that you be mindful of parvo. It does exist and I know several patients of mine who contracted it as puppies. If you choose not to vaccinate, you should have a game plan in place should your dog contract it. My natural reared German Shepherd Dog was not vaccinated for anything except rabies. He was around other dogs. My only worry for him was that he was around other dogs who were being actively vaccinated, shedding the virus in his presence. There is the risk of contracting the virus due to that. However, he has been a very healthy dog, no issues. I did have a plan in place of Amber Technology's Parvaid, GI health supplements by Vitality Science, colostrum, and immune boosting mushrooms, should my dog contract parvo.
(4) As long as puppies aren't formula fed, they retain maternal antibodies which protect them against disease in their environment. These maternal antibodies tend to last 4-5 months. These maternal antibodies either block the "immunization" or the vaccine overrides them. This is why puppies are vaccinated with the same vaccines, multiple times, so that it eventually will take. This is why vaccines administered <16 weeks don't do anything in regards to antibody production, however at the same time, they are introducing many harsh chemicals and adjuvants into the body.
(5) If someone would like to administer "core vaccines" to their pets, they need not vaccinate annually. Most of these vaccines show 9-15 year antibody response to the diseases they are vaccinated against.
(6) Are single vaccines better? Not necessarily. When it comes to singles or parvo and distemper, these
modified live vaccines contain mercury. This isn't so in the combination of them. If you are choosing to vaccinate, do you want to introduce two immune responses to disease at once or mercury?
(7) Rabies vaccinations are mandated by law in most states. However, it has the highest for adverse events after vaccination, ascending paralysis and behavioral problems - snapping at flies, chasing shadows, fear of thunderstorms, etc. Dr. Jordan tested an unvaccinated puppy and he showed a high titer of rabies at 20 weeks. This was inherited from mother or somewhere in the puppy's environment. She advises wait 16-20 weeks for rabies. In my own dog, I waited until 32 weeks/8 months. Most naturally minded vets will agree that 1-2 rabies vaccines in the lifetime of the pet are all they "need" to show antibody response upon titering.
(8) Titering... does this really show black and white protection against disease? No. Immunity is so much more than an antibody response. There are millions of other cells in the body that play a role, as well as the current health status of you pet, their diet, their environment, their lifestyle. It is far, far from black and white. I have never had a titer test performed on my pet to determine whether I should vaccinate them because of this. I had one done once on my border collie in order to have a dental on her as she was "overdue" for distemper. This test allowed her to get her dental without her vet requiring a distemper vaccine.
(9) Influenza vaccines will make it much more likely that the dog will come down with influenza, they also become immunosuppressed and more likely to get bacterial pneumonia. This information came from listening to an interview. Several years after that interview was performed, this exact scenario happened in the Chicagoland area (my area). There was a canine flu epidemic in April 2015. It was on the news and vets were urging pet owners to get their dogs vaccinated so that this epidemic would stop. This causes many fearful pet owners to rush into their vet, get their dog vaccinated which causes their immune system to become compromised following the vaccination, and there were many sick dogs around them in the animal hospital. Furthermore, with vaccine shedding, those who were out and about following vaccination shed the flu to other dogs in their environment. It became much, much worse. Senior dogs and those already immune compromised did in fact contract bacterial pneumonia. One of my senior dog patients who contracted bacterial pneumonia was not able to overcome it.
(10) The leptospirosis vaccine tends to be very controversial. Most vets that I have spoken to do not advise it as it is known to cause adverse effects. The "lepto" vaccine contains bacterin (made with part of the bacteria). This is very difficult to derive immunity from. Most dogs don’t get protection from it. However, most dogs that get the lepto vaccine acquire very itchy skin for several years. Inflammation is strong enough to be a pro-carcinogen and allow cancers to come forth. The skin is a major organ for immunity. Plus, this vaccine has mercury, aluminum, formalin, and other adjuvants. It is a very inflammatory vaccine. Dr. Roger Schultz does not recommend lepto or lyme vaccines, even in areas they are endemic.
(11) Vaccines cause diseases to mutate jump species. For example, panleukopenia is actually a parvovirus. Vaccines cause disease to mutate and this mutation came from close contact between cats and dogs. This can happen from any species to another, not just dogs and cats.
(12) Vaccines simply ruin the system. Multiple antigens are given at same time. The following are ways that vaccines cause adverse effects to the system from the Journal of Allergy 1999 54-398-399:
(13) ApA protein found in vaccines causes severe neuro-degeneration, delayed immune hypersensitiivty reactions in synovial joints and neurological problems.
(14) MMPs (matrix metalloproteinases) in vaccines are responsible for the breakdown of connective tissue, joints, and bone,
(15) People are under the misinterpretation that vaccines are going to protect their pets and keep them well. This is not true. There is no magic shield to protect you or your pet from all disease. I choose to keep the body as healthy as possible so that my body and the bodies of my pets are highly adaptable to whatever they should come across in their environment. Most disease is also incredibly opportunistic, meaning it would "infect" unless given the right terrain in the body.
(16) The Hayward Study on vaccines at Purdue University: autoantibodies to many of their own biochemicals, including fibronectin, laminin, DNA, albumin, cytochrome C, cardiolipin and collagen. These autoantibodies cause the dog or cat to attack their own body, cause autoimmune disease.
(17) In August 2003, the Journal of Veterinary Medicine carried an Italian study which showed that dogs also develop vaccine-induced cancers at their injection sites.
(18) In 2000, CHC’s findings were confirmed by research which showed that polyarthritis and other diseases like amyloidosis, which affects organs in dogs, were linked to the combined vaccine given to dogs.
(19) Modified live-virus (MLV) vaccines replicate in the patient until an immune response is provoked. If a defence isn’t stimulated, then the vaccine continues to replicate until it gives the patient the very disease it was intending to prevent.
(20) Much of what people choose is chosen blindly due to the feeling of protection or from fear. For myself personally, these are not valid reasons to choose to do something.

- Damages DNA
- Damages nervous tissues
- Damages energy production/mitochondria
- Damages glutamine system
- MMPs - destroyers of mammalian connective tissue and bone
- Aluminum potent carcinogen, sits in hippocampus, endocrine regulator/IgE increasing
- Decrease BBB (Blood brain barrier)
- Mycoplasma contamination
- Mercury can inactivate viruses
- Males un-naturally increase testosterone
- Females have a higher chance of autoimmune disease

Ways to Support Your Dog or Cat To Decrease the Chance of Disease
In puppies and kittens, you can administer collostrum to give the body natural immunoglobulins to fight off infection. Medicinal mushrooms or a reishi mushroom/astragalus combo can offer protection when around other dogs.
Should your pet become ill, here are some of my favorite products*:
Amber Technology offers many tinctures that work very well against disease, from colds and coughs to parvo
Vitality Science offers a great GI kit if your dog or cat is dealing with gastrointestinal issues
Turmeric/Curcumin - decreases inflammation
Medicinal Mushrooms - support immunity, increase NK (natural killer) cells
Colloidal Silver (liquid) is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral
*Use common sense, do not substitute these for needed veterinary care
- Prey Model Raw Diet
- Probiotics, I prefer soil based by Vitality Science or Prescript Assist
- Sleep
- Exercise
- Minimal Toxins applied to, administered orally, or in the environment
- Fresh Air
